Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn (1606-1669) Adam and Eve (Counterproof) (Bartsch, Hollstein 28, Hind 159, New Hollstein 168), 1638 Etching on laid paper, a counterproof, trimmed to platemark, framed. sheet 6 1/2 x 4 3/4in (16.7 x 12cm) Footnotes: Provenance Heneage Finch Earl of Aylesford (Lugt 58); William Bell Scott (Lugt 2607); Galerie Michael, Beverly Hills; Acquired directly from the above. A counterproof is an impression taken directly from another just printed, rather than from the printing matrix, in this case, the etching plate. For this reason, counterproofs are more lightly inked than the impressions from which they are taken and they are also in reverse. Being in the same orientation as the plate matrix, counterproof impressions allow the artist to more easily assess any necessary changes needed to improve the quality of the lines. The 4th Earl of Aylesford (1751-1812) is likely the first of Rembrandt's most dedicated print collectors. 'Lord Aylesford' is listed in the provenance for several lots of the master's etchings in the Hibbert sales catalogue. His son, the 5th Earl of Aylesford (1786-1859), inherited his father's collection and added to it, thus constituting one of the most important collections of works on paper at the time in England. Condition reports are not provided in catalog descriptions. The absence of a condition report does not guarantee that the lot is in good condition or free from damage and wear. We encourage you to request a condition report and/or additional photos prior to bidding on any lot.
