CHINA IN THE 18TH CENTURY. STAUNTON, GEORGE. 1737-1801. An Authentic Account of An Embassy from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China ... Taken chiefly from the Papers of His Excellency the Earl of Macartney. London: W. Bulmer & Co. for G. Nicol, 1797. 2 volumes plus atlas. 4to (290 x 226 mm) and folio atlas (406 x 544 mm). Atlas with 44 engraved maps, plans and plates (1 folding, 6 double-page); text volumes with 2 engraved portraits of the Emperor and the Earl of Macartney, engraved Camellia plate and 25 engraved vignettes. Contemporary diced calf ruled in gilt, rebacked retaining original spines, gilt in 6 compartments with morocco lettering pieces, marbled endpapers, card slipcase for atlas. Scattered browning and spotting, margins of atlas slightly trimmed, occasional dampstaining at upper margins of text volumes. Provenance: Sir Thomas Hesketh, Baronet, Rufford Hall, Lancashire (bookplate); Property from a New England Collector. FIRST EDITION of the official account of Lord Macartney's voyage and embassy to the Qianlong emperor in 1792-94, the failure of which lead to the establishment of the British trading post at Hong Kong. The plates by Alexander show views of the Great Wall, temples, barges, a military post and an imperial procession, with descriptions of Chinese customs (including foot-binding), details of trade with Europe, and places visited en route, such as Madeira, Tenerife, Rio de Janeiro, Java and Sumatra. The work had a profound effect on English views of China, including Alexander's illustrations, which 'remained unrivalled until the era or photography. They were used, often without acknowledgement, to illustrate books on China and it would be surprising if they did not play a considerable role in the renewed interest in chinoiserie which affected England in the two decades following Alexander's return' (Löwendahl).
