ATHANASIUS KIRCHER'S COPY. MAGALOTTI, LORENZO. 1637-1712. Saggi di naturali esperienze fatte nell' Accademia del Cimento. Florence: Giuseppe Cocchini, 1667. Folio (340 x 235 mm). Half-title, engraved vignette device of the Accademia del Cimento on title, 75 full-page engraved illustrations, engraved head- and tailpieces. Contemporary mottled calf, spine with 4 raised bads, decorated in gilt in 5 compartments. Rubbed, lacking portrait of Ferdinand II, scattered browning, heavy browning to 4 leaves of preliminaries. Provenance: Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680, autograph inscription dated 1679); Aloysius Marzusi (bookplate and signature); Pierre Gelis-Didot (French artist, 1853-1937, bookplate); Harrison D. Horblit (American bibliophile and philanthropist, 1912-1988, book label); sold Christie London, May 22, 1988, lot 104. FIRST EDITION, 2nd issue, THE HORBLIT COPY, INSCRIBED BY ATHANASIUS KIRCHER TO TITLE PAGE, 'Questo libro dona al suo amant[issi]mo fra[te]llo Gaspare Smali, in dono et uso proprio; il suo amant. P. Atanasio Kircher, irrevocablimente. Rome feria 6 d'ap[rile] 1679.' A few copies were assembled in late 1666 before the print run was completed, and were dated accordingly. This work, published anonymously, describes the experiments of the Accademia del Cimento, and is considered 'the first report from what we would now call a research laboratory' (Middleton). The engravings depict various scientific instruments, including the thermometer and barometer, and describes experiments in acoustics, air pressure, the freezing of water, and other topics. The Accademia del Cimento was an exclusive association of scientists, limited to only 10 members at a time. While Kircher was a correspondent of the organization, he was not a member. Court physician and naturalist Francesco Redi was active in the experiments (though not mentioned in the work), and famously clashed with Kircher over their differing methods. Dibner Heralds 82; Krivatsy 25; Norman 485; Wellcome IV, p 23. See Middleton, The Experimenters: A Study of the Accademia del Cimento, 1971.
