PLAYFAIR AND HIS SECURITY BANK. PLAYFAIR, WILLIAM. 1759-1823. Two Autograph Letters Signed: 1. Signed ('W. Playfair') to Wadeson, Hardy, and Barlow, solicitors, regarding a complicated bond payment as part of his bankruptcy proceeding as a result of his 'Security Bank' scheme, the verso recording an accounting of his dealings with the firm, 3 pp, 230 x 190 mm, bifolium, with integral address leaf and remnants of seal, Bell Savage Yard, March, 12, 1799, docketed and stamped above address. 2. Signed ('William Playfair') to Lord Landsdale regarding a book about Landsdale's family for Playfair's British Family Antiquity, 1 p, 230 x 190 mm, 29 Bury Street, Holborn, January 29, 1809, recipient's name to verso, old folds, creasing. Provenance: Enys Collection; Property from a New England Collector. For all of his genius and his revolutionary approach to information and statistics, William Playfair's life also involved a series of questionable endeavors. Part rogue, part huckster, Playfair engaged in a number of careers, including in 1797 the creation of the 'Original Security Bank,' in order to facilitate the granting of small loans by subdividing larger securities. When the name proved misleading and the bank failed, Playfair spent a number of years pursued by debtors, even landing in prison. The first letter is to his solicitors, and shows a bit of his financial chicanery in his shuffling of funds between the firm, a Captain Mansfield, a Mr. Gash, and others. Importantly, the verso provides an accounting of his dealings with the firm. The second letter to Lord Landsdale relates to his final publication, the 1809 British Family Antiquity. Playfair is requesting a book 'relating to your family' as the 'Printer will very soon want the manuscript.' See Bellhouse, David, The Flawed Genius of William Playfair, 2023.
