AUTHOR'S COPY OF THE TRAVELS OF A PRINCE. SCHOMBURGK, ROBERT H. 1804-1865. And JOHN EDWARD TAYLOR. 1791-1844. Translator. Travels of His Royal Highness Prince Adalbert of Prussia, in the South of Europe and in Brazil, with a Voyage up the Amazon and the Xingu. London: David Bogue, 1849. 2 volumes. 8vo. Standing portrait frontispiece in volume I, 4 folding maps. Contemporary maroon morocco ruled and titled in gilt, gilt eagle motif on upper covers, spines with 5 raised bands, all edges gilt. Light shelfwear and minor spotting. Provenance: Prince Adalbert of Prussia (bookplates); Property from a New England Collector. PRINCE ADALBERT'S OWN COPY of the English translation of his travelogue. Prince Heinrich Wilhelm Adalbert von Hohenzollern (1811-1873) was the grandson of King Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia, and therefore a cousin to successive Prussian Kings, including Kaiser Wilhelm I. The travels recorded here were undertaken between 1826 and 1842, starting when the Prince was a very young man, and helped to cement his understanding of the importance of naval power for the loosely united German states that were beginning to coalesce into what would become the German Empire. In 1848 he began to organize a navy for the confederated German states, and negotiated a treaty between Prussia and Oldenburg to establish the first German naval base at Wilhelmshaven in 1854. He became Prince-Admiral in command of the fledgling navy, resigning his post only after the conclusion of the Franco-Prussian War and establishment of the German Empire in 1871. Borba de Moraes I, p 13.
