A LIFE-SIZE TAXIDERMY HORSE WITH A MODEL OF A SAMURAI RIDER IN ARMOR Edo period (1615-1868), 18th/19th century and 20th century The white horse positioned in a canter with the front left leg raised, wearing a black-lacquer saddle with a saddle pad covering the seat, cantle, and pommel, with green and gilt-leather hadazuke (double saddle pads) and aori (saddle flaps), the matching chikaragawa (stirrup straps) supporting iron abumi (stirrups) decorated with mon (heraldic crest) of four interlocking circles in silver overlays, the chest and haunches adorned with decorative silk tassels held in place by a shirigai (crupper) looping under the horse's tail, the snaffle bit, bridle, and reins all held in place by leather sanjakugawa (bridle straps) decorated with mon of omodaka (water plantain) in gilt and black lacquer, set on a large oval stand The samurai figure wearing armor lacquered gold with gilt-brass hardware on the components and laced in orange, with a ko-boshi kabuto lacquered black with a four-stage chrysanthemum-form tehen kanamono, the bowl mounted with a six-lame shikoro, the front of the bowl adorned with an iron circular maedate decorated with a dragon in relief and large gilt-brass kuwagata; the russet-lacquer menpō applied with a boar-bristle mustache and chin tuft and fitted with a four-stage yodarekake; the cuirass a ni-mai yokohagi okegawa dō with standing rivets, fitted with seven sections of five-lame kusazari; the ō-sode resting above shinogote; the thigh guards of tight rows of square plates; shino suneate and boar skin boots 80 x 98 x 36in (203 x 248 x 91.4cm), the horse; 103in (261cm) high overall approximately This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: W W If the lot is not picked up immediately following the auction it may be removed to an offsite storage location for collection.
