Sudhir Ranjan Khastigir (1907-1974) Untitled (Lady playing the Sitar) signed and dated 1947 in Bengali with the artist's monogram upper left pencil and watercolour on paper, framed 72.4 x 38.5cm (28 1/2 x 15 3/16in). Footnotes: Provenance Property from a private collection, UK. Khastigir was a prominent Indian artist and educator, renowned for his lyrical portrayals of Indian life and culture. Born in Chittagong, Bengal (now in Bangladesh), Khastigir was a versatile artist proficient in painting, drawing, and sculpture. He studied under the guidance of Nandalal Bose at the prestigious Kala Bhavana in Santiniketan, which deeply influenced his artistic practice. Untitled (Lady Playing the Sitar) is a delicate portrayal of the harmonious relationship between music, grace, and serenity. Known for his sensitive and lyrical depictions of Indian subjects, Khastigir captures the essence of a serene moment in this work. The composition features a seated woman playing the sitar, her posture embodying poise and concentration as her fingers gently pluck the strings.
