LINDBERGH (CHARLES) Two typed letters signed ('Charles A. Lindbergh'), to Rev. Dr. Rosslyn Bruce ('Dear Bruce'), the first expressing his sadness on the death of his dog Faloma but reassuring Bruce that it was the best course of action, as a previous fox terrier of his had been affected with the same condition ('...it would have been better if he had not lived...'), docketed 'Col Lindbergh' at head; the second thanking him for his book on fox terrier breeding ('...if you are in the vicinity of Long Barn, we would be very glad you have you stop for lunch...'), two pages, dust-staining, discolouration and creases, 4to (255 x 204mm.), Long Barn, Sevenoaks, 21 and 29 December 1936 (2) Footnotes: Charles Lindbergh (1902-1973), pioneering American aviator, achieved worldwide fame for making the first nonstop transatlantic flight from New York to Paris in May 1927. He gained further unwanted public attention after the notorious abduction and murder of his son, Charles Jr, in the spring of 1932. Wishing to escape after the trial of the kidnapper, and fearing for the family's safety, the Lindberghs fled incognito by boat to Liverpool. After initially staying with relatives in South Wales, Lindbergh rented Long Barn in Sevenoaks from Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson, who had lived there until 1931. The recipient of our letter, Rev. Dr. Francis Rosslyn Courtenay Bruce (1871-1956) was a great authority on the fox terrier breed, and the author of several books including Fox Terrier Breeding (Smooth & Wire), of 1931, the work mentioned here. Lindbergh was known for his keen interest in fox terriers and had owned them since he was a boy, an interest that came to the attention of the press during the trial of his son's kidnapper. His fox terrier, usually a diligent and vocal house dog, had not barked at the intruder, leading to speculation that the kidnapping was an inside job. Provenance: Rev.
