A carved walnut armorial panel Late 19th century Carved in relief with a coat-of-arms and motto of the Boddington family 'Vincit Veritas' and monogram, the reverse with Celtic knotwork and further inscription, dated 1897, 43cm wide, 62.5cm high (16.5in wide, 24.5in high) Footnotes: These are the arms of a branch of the Boddington family of Manchester. The grant of 1890 was to Henry (Pownal) Boddington (1849-1925) of Pownall Hall, Wilmslow Cheshire, a member of the family owned Boddington Brewery Company of Strangeways, Manchester which had been established in 1778. He was a Director of the brewery and later became a Director of the Manchester Ship Canal (act 1883, completed 1894). The panel may have been displayed either at the brewery or in the boardroom of the MSC. Henry Boddington (1849-1925) was born in Manchester the son of Henry Boddington (died 1884). In 1878 he married Emily Butterworth (1859-1937) of Eccles. They had one son Henry Boddington (1881-1964), who was also a director of the brewery. He married in 1925 Alice Christina Weir (1884-1937) the widow of Alan Graham Thompson of Edinburgh. They had no children and as a result these two Henrys are the only two members of the family who could legitimately display the arms in this carving.
