Formerly one of Germany's leading aircraft manufacturers, Heinkel turned to the production of scooters, 'bubble cars' and mopeds after WW2. Introduced in 1954 Heinkel's typically over-engineered Perle moped was one of the most advanced of its type, featuring a cast aluminium frame, two-speed transmission, interchangeable wheels and swinging-arm rear suspension incorporating the final drive chaincase. The Perle was imported into the UK by Excelsior and first shown on the latter's stand at the 1955 Motor Cycle Show. Approximately 27,000 Perles had been sold by the time production ceased in 1957. There are no documents with this charming little machine and unfortunately we have been unable to determine whether or not the engine turns over.
