A Chita Rivera Original Cue Script for the Role of Anita in West Side Story Typed Manuscript Signed ('Chita Rivera'), the original 'cue script' for the character of Anita, 10 pp, oblong 8vo, [New York, 1957], staple bound in blue wrappers with Rivera's penciled notes on verso, creased horizontally, thumbing and toning to pages. This ten-page document is Chita Rivera's 'cue script' for West Side Story, containing all of Anita's dialogue in black ink with the introductory lines or actions in red ink. The document introduces Anita ('Knowing, sexual, sharp') and opens in the bridal shop discussing Maria's arranged marriage to Chino, then moves to Scenes 4, 5, 7, through the dance and the tensions that arise, then on to Act II, scenes 3 and 4, the rumble and its aftermath. On the verso, Chita has rewritten dialogue and performance notes for Act I, scene 7: '(Screaming with joy) She's gone—the old bruja has gone / the day is over—jail is open & home we go (twirling smock and hanging it up) ...Finish tomorrow, come / I'm in no hurry—I am—I'm going to take a bubble bath all during supper. Jasmine / You will not eat? After the rumble with Nardo—That rumble, etc.' Chita seems to give herself notes: 'Put stress on all during next speech—must get it out.' Rivera then goes on to emphasize her last lines in the scene: 'Well you'll need it—you're crazy—both of you. [completely, etc. (cross after line / start to leave)] You will not tell?' A phenomenal artifact of one of the most beloved and influential musicals of the 20th century. Lot to be sold without reserve.
