A good late 18th century mahogany balloon clock with enamel dial, deadbeat escapement, and maintaining power. Dated 1787. Thomas Grignon, Covent Garden. The movement dated 1787. Surmounted by a pineapple finial over a pair of side handles and waisted lower section centred by a cast brass sunburst panel, all raised on brass ogee bracket feet. The 7 inch signed white enamel Roman and Arabic dial with matching blued steel hands, the flat glass within a stepped cast bezel, shaped rear door with cast fish scale sound fret backed in faded red silk. The large circular movement filling the rear of the case, with twin gut fusees and maintaining power, deadbeat escapement and rack striking on a bell. The backplate, signed 'Thomas Grignon London' and dated 1787. The wood rod pendulum with an engraved rating nut. Together with a replacement winding key. 54cms (21 inches) high Footnotes: Thomas Grignion (1713-1784) was from a prominent family of horologists. His father, also named Thomas, and his grandfather, Daniel Grignion, were both noted as finishers for the clockmaker Daniel Quare, Thomas Grignions work can be seen in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum.
