A fine and rare mid 18th century English small ormolu-mounted turtle shell veneered quarter chiming table clock with enamel 24-hour dial and centre seconds, made for the Chinese market Marriott, London The caddy top with pine cone finial over mounts of scrolls and foliage, the side apertures backed in red silk and covered with pierced scroll frets, the arched front door with gilt liner, all set on scroll feet. The 3.75 inch white enamel dial with twice I to XII and twice 0-60 in five minute divisions, with matching gilt hands and an arrow-shaped centre seconds hand, set below a subsidiary dial to opt between strike and silence, both dials framed by foliate and shell C-scrolls. The twin gut fusee movement with shouldered plates united by five knopped pillars, both plates cast with the letter M (for Marriott?), the going train with knife-edge verge escapement, the strike train sounding the hours and quarters on a pair of bells and hammers mounted on the backplate.
