A fine and rare mid 18th century English small ormolu-mounted turtle shell veneered quarter chiming table clock with enamel 24-hour dial and centre seconds, made for the Chinese market Marriott, London The caddy top with pine cone finial over mounts of scrolls and foliage, the side apertures backed in red silk and covered with pierced scroll frets, the arched front door with gilt liner, all set on scroll feet. The 3.75 inch white enamel dial with twice I to XII and twice 0-60 in five minute divisions, with matching gilt hands and an arrow-shaped centre seconds hand, set below a subsidiary dial to opt between strike and silence, both dials framed by foliate and shell C-scrolls. The twin gut fusee movement with shouldered plates united by five knopped pillars, both plates cast with the letter M (for Marriott?), the going train with knife-edge verge escapement, the strike train sounding the hours and quarters on a pair of bells and hammers mounted on the backplate. The backplate engraved with a central basket of flowers over the signature within a delicate floral scroll cartouche and flower sprays. 38cms (15ins) high Footnotes: Comparative literature: An almost identical ormolu-mounted turtle shell case is illustrated in 'Clocks and Watches of the Qing Dynasty from the Collection in the Forbidden City', Foreign Languages Press, 2002, page 113. Buyers' Premium and Charges


For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:

Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
