A Late 17th century ebony Quarter repeating table clock Peter Garon, London The caddy top set with a foliate handle and pierced foliate mounts, the door with a cast gilt sound-fret backed in red silk over twin escutcheons. The glazed sides with additional sound frets featuring cherubs at the centre, and a glazed rear door, all on a moulded base and gilt button feet. The 7-inch square dial with Roman and Arabic chapter ring, framed by four cast winged cherubs with strike/silent lever at IX. The matted centre with decorated mock pendulum and date apertures, (signed behind the mock pendulum 'Peter Garon, London' , pierced, shaped blued steel hands. The five pillar twin gut fusee movement with knife-edge verge escapement, striking on a single bell and repeating the quarters on three bells, the backplate signed within a foliate cartouche amid a symmetrical pattern of foliate scrolls inhabited by pairs of birds framed by a wheatear border. Ticking, striking, and repeating. 40cms (15.75ins) high Footnotes: A clock with very similar engraving to the backplate possibly by the same hand signed Simon DeCharmes is is illustrated in Sunny Dzik, Engraving on English table clocks, pp 290-291. Peter Garon was born around 1673 and was apprenticed to Richard Baker in 1687. He was granted freedom of the City in 1694 by the Lord Mayor and made a Freeman of the Clockmakers Company in August of the same year. It is thought that he became insolvent in 1723. (See Loomes,'The Early Clockmakers of Great Britain' NAG Press, 1981.) He made watches, table clocks and longcases. A silver mounted, quarter chiming table clock by him is illustrated in Dawson, Drover, Parkes, 'Early English Clocks,' Antique Collectors Club, 1984, plate 696.
