At the end of high school, around 1940, he met Mai Van Thu and Vo Lang, who were studying at the École des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine in Hanoi. Tran Duy decided to enrol himself and began studying at this school. In the late 1960s, Tran Duy turned to painting landscapes on silk. He particularly liked to draw trees, ancient temples and shrines, as well as houses of the old days. His paintings are natural and elegant, his style is cautious, thoughtful, meticulous, soft, and gentle. It is even somewhat restrained when it comes to expressing small details, but implicitly, without compromising the vitality and richness of the emotional aspect. His paintings are characterised by thin but bold brushstrokes and an insipid but subtle colour palette.
