A Gone with the Wind Victorian Beaded Needlepoint Roundel from Aunt Pittypat's Parlor Victorian beaded needlepoint roundel depicting Bertel Thorvaldsen's 'Night and Day' using thread and beads of brown, black, gray, and white against a background of burgundy thread, framed. Accompanied by a Xerographic set still showing the set in which the needlework appears; and provenance paperwork. Selznick International Pictures, 1939. In a bit of comic relief amidst the drama in Gone with the Wind is the beloved scene between Rhett Butler (played by Clark Gable) and Scarlett O'Hara Hamilton (played by Vivien Leigh) in the Atlanta parlor of Aunt Pittypat. Scarlett dons a new hat (given to her by Rhett) incorrectly and intentionally; they laugh together at her joke and give the audience what it wants to see. Rhett attempts to cheer up Scarlett, who has been imprisoned in widow's weeds since the death of her first husband, Charles Hamilton, by courting her and giving her gifts. When Scarlett stands in front of the fireplace and shows Rhett how she looks in the bonnet (in a screen closeup), the framed needlework piece can be seen on the right. A twin roundel is across the room, and reproduction set stills of both angles, 8.5 x 11 in., are included in this lot, although only one is being offered in this sale. Provenance: Doyle New York, Belle Epoque: 19th and 20th Century Decorative Arts, September 24, 2003, lot 3556. Overall: 25 in. diameter; within frame: 19 in. diameter. Lot to be sold without reserve.
