Fred MacMurray's impressive early film career took a backseat when he later appeared in a successful run of Disney films and on the popular 1960s television series, My Three Sons, but in the 1930s and '40s when he was under contract to Paramount Pictures, he was one of the most popular romantic leads. His comedic flair and talent as a musician were utilized in romantic comedies with Paramount's leading ladies (most notably Claudette Colbert) and in such zany films as Murder, He Says (1945), but he was equally impressive as the chump who succumbs to the charms of Barbara Stanwyck in Double Indemnity (1944), arguably the greatest film noir of all time. Billy Wilder, who directed both this film and The Apartment (1960), chose MacMurray as the villain for both pictures because it was so against type and because he knew that MacMurray had the acting chops to pull off the heavy.
