A Gone with the Wind Wall Panel from Scarlett's Atlanta Mansion Bedroom A faux damask silk and painted pine and plaster faux panel. Selznick International Pictures, 1939. Scarlett's bedroom in the Atlanta mansion is a study in opulence; the bed has its own platform and the furnishings abound in velvets, satins, laces, and silks, with sumptuous ornamentation throughout. This panel is to the left of Scarlett's bed and is seen at various times including when Scarlett has just given birth to her baby and Melanie comments on her blue eyes, saying they are 'as blue as the Bonnie Blue Flag.' We see Rhett at Scarlett's bedside, asking her for a divorce; and we see Scarlett silently ecstatic over her night of passion with Rhett, all within the confines of her bedroom and near the beautiful wall panel. Producer David O. Selznick spared no expense in the set decorations, remaining as true as possible to Margaret Mitchell's novel. As author Cynthia Marylee Molt wrote in her book, Gone with the Wind on Film: A Complete Reference: 'The Atlanta mansion is a combination of what was seen primarily at Twelve Oaks and at Belle [Watling's], topped with the largest and grandest things found in medieval courts and castles in Europe ... they are Scarlett's way of saying she is unique, that she accepts only the grandest and best things in life, making up for the times when poverty was all too close.' The panel has appeared in many other films including against the backdrop of Fred Astaire singing and dancing to the song, 'One for My Baby' in The Sky's the Limit (1943); and in the following productions: The Great Gildersleeve (1942); Government Girl (1943) with Olivia de Havilland; Mr. Lucky (1943) with Cary Grant; Cornered (1945) with Dick Powell; The Velvet Touch (1948) with Rosalind Russell; My Forbidden Past (1951) with Robert Mitchum; At Sword's Point (1952) with Maureen O'Hara; and more productions including 2 episodes of Batman, one titled 'That Darn Catwoman' and the other titled, 'A Piece of the Action,' both 1967. This wall panel has enhanced many of the Golden Age of Hollywood's greatest films. Accompanied by several pages of screen grabs showing the films in which the panel has appeared.
