A Gone with the Wind Dressing Table from Scarlett's Atlanta Mansion Bedroom A Rococo Revival style fabric inset carved and painted pine dressing table, with flecks of gold paint. Selznick International Pictures, 1939. As Rhett Butler (played by Clark Gable) stated in the last sequence of Gone with the Wind, he and Scarlett (played by Vivien Leigh) always seemed to be at cross purposes. One of the best examples of this frustrating back-and-forth is the scene in which Scarlett, after finding a photograph of Ashley Wilkes in the top drawer of this dressing table, declares to Rhett that she doesn't want to have any more children (or intimacy) with him. Scarlett is gorgeously costumed in an emerald green dressing gown in front of this table, and the table is adorned with enormous crystal candelabras, flowers, and assorted perfumes which represent the wealth and glamour associated with her life as Rhett's wife. His initial loving approach to her is squelched with her proclamation and leaves the audience disheartened. The dressing table also appears in other productions including Goin' to Town (1935, before it appeared in GWTW and which starred Mae West), Are Husband's Necessary? (1942), and The Fighting Kentuckian (1949). Accompanied by a reproduction set still and a Xerographic set still from Gone with the Wind showing the set in which the dressing table appears, 8.5 x 11 in.; 2 reproduction behind-the-scenes stills of Vivien Leigh sitting at the dressing table; 3 black-and-white scene stills showing Scarlett at the dressing table; a vintage set still from Goin' to Town; 3 vintage set stills from Are Husband's Necessary?; and a scene still from The Fighting Kentuckian, all of which feature the dressing table, all 8 x 10 in.; and assorted provenance paperwork. Height: 31 in.; width: 80 in.; depth: 35 in.
