An Angela Lansbury Costume Sketch for The Three Musketeers by Walter Plunkett MGM, 1948. Designed by Walter Plunkett. Gouache, watercolor, and pencil on illustration board, signed ('Plunkett') in watercolor to lower right and initials 'RB' below his signature, with a fabric swatch affixed to board at upper left, and 'Queen Anne / #2' handwritten in pencil to upper right, with rubber stamp imprint for approval on the verso filled out in pencil with '1420' as the production number, '4893' as the sketch number, 'Angela Lansbury' as the designated star, 'Kathryn McMillan' as the fitter, dated '1/2/48,' and sequence '#2.' 'Completed / Feb. 17–48 / WP' is written and initialed by Plunkett to verso as well. Before she became a Broadway and television legend, Angela Lansbury had an impressive film career that is sometimes overlooked. Under contract to the venerable MGM for years, her first film, Gaslight (1944), teamed her with the formidable Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman; Lansbury was nominated for an Oscar® for her performance. From there she played varied roles including glamour girls, villains, and in The Three Musketeers, a queen. In this film directed by George Sidney, Lansbury is costumed by Academy Award®-winning designer, Walter Plunkett (best known for his creations for Gone with the Wind [1939]), in extravagant and luxurious robes and gowns befitting her royal status as the character of Queen Anne. Lansbury later recalled that the roles given her were too mature, including that of Queen Anne: 'I was playing Frank Morgan's wife ... I got to dress up and look kind of staggering and terrific with all this paraphernalia that was on me. But I was still way out of my age range. I hated it. And I fought it. And I tried hard. But nothing ever goes to waste as an actress. You docket it all away, and you remember and you use stuff later.' 22 x 15 in. Lot to be sold without reserve.
