A Vivien Leigh Original Costume Sketch by Walter Plunkett for Gone with the Wind, the Barbecue Gown Selznick International Pictures, 1939. Watercolor and pencil on board, signed ('Plunkett') in green watercolor to lower right, with typescript legend affixed to bottom of board with excerpt from the book relating to the specific gown, and a 'Selznick International Pictures' approval stamp to verso indicating in red pencil that the design is for 'Scarlett,' for Picture No. '28-9,' and for Change No. '20,' with other spaces left blank. Together with a reproduction photograph of Vivien Leigh wearing the gown, 8 x 10 in. Scarlett O'Hara, played by Vivien Leigh, charms the boys at the Twelve Oaks barbeque in this bright and sunny floral ensemble, but the day holds much more than she bargained for. The audience first sees this gown when Mammy (played by Hattie McDaniel) helps Scarlett put it on and insist she not show any 'bosom' and that she wear her shawl. From there we see Scarlett declare her love for Ashley Wilkes (played by Leslie Howard), meet and argue with Rhett Butler (played by Clark Gable), and accept a proposal from Charles Hamilton (played by Rand Brooks)! Indeed, Rhett catches his first glimpse of the woman he would come to love more than any other while she ascends the Twelve Oaks staircase in this dress. Designer Walter Plunkett pursued producer David O. Selznick for the job of costume designer for Gone with the Wind, so desirous was he of the position. He read Margaret Mitchell's novel over and over, each time finding new information to aid him in creating accurate clothing for the period as well as for the individual characters. Interestingly, this particular costume was designed before Vivien Leigh was cast in the part and the face was possibly drawn as an amalgamation of the many actresses who were vying for the role of Scarlett, as well as how she was described in the book by Mitchell. The gown was originally slated for the opening scene of the film when Scarlett chats with the Tarleton Twins, but it was later replaced with the white gown. For the 40th anniversary of GWTW, Plunkett re-created the gown using cloth he had saved from the original dress! It was displayed at the LA County Museum. Accompanied by a reproduction still of Vivien Leigh wearing the gown. 18 x 23 in.
