SAKAMOTO HANJIRO (1882-1959) Showa era (1926-1989), circa 1950 A complete set of five oban yoko-e landscape prints, titled Aso gokei (Five Views of Aso), comprising (1) Hoboku (Grazing), (2) Funkako (Volcanic Crater), (3) Nekodake no asa (Morning at Nekodake), (4) Namino no tsuki (Moon at Namino), and (5) Nangodani (Nangodani Crater Floor), published by Sojinsha and Kato Hanga Kenkyujo, probably the first edition, each signed with a square seal Sakamoto; together with a frontispiece or title page and a paper folder with dedicatory inscriptions. Each sheet approx. 27.5cm x 38cm (10 13/16in x 15in). (7). Footnotes: Born in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture, Sakamoto Hanjiro was an oil painter and print artist. He collaborated with the artists Yamamoto Kanae and Ishii Tsuruzo on the seminal magazine 'Hosun' from 1909-1911, and also published a collection of woodblock actor prints together with Yamamoto Kanae. In 1918 he contributed five designs to Nihon fukei hanga (Prints of Japanese Views). In recognition of his highly respected Western-style oil paintings, he was awarded the the Order of Cultural Merit in 1956.
