A blue-skinned prince and maidens by a pavilion, perhaps an illustration to a Rasraj of Matiram series Datia, circa 1770 gouache and gold on paper, yellow panel at top with two lines of text in nagari text in black and red ink, red border 322 x 230 mm. Footnotes: Provenance Private collection, Germany. The painting perhaps derives from a Rasraj of Matiram series. Matiram's poetry, written between 1633 and 1643, takes its place alongside the better known works of the late 16th and 17th Century, the Rasikapriya of Keshavdas and the Sat Sai of Bihari Lal. All consist of classical erotically-themed poems, but the Rasraj is defined as of the ritikal genre - mannered and ornamented. For other examples see the sale in these rooms, Sir Terence Conran: the Contents of Barton Court, London, 14th December 2022, lot 310 (two paintings in the lot); Christie's, Arts of India, 12th June 2018, lot 73; and Simon Ray, Indian and Islamic Works of Art, London 2017, nos. 36 and 37.
