Nawab Muhammad Sa Khan on horseback with attendants on foot alongside Jodhpur, by the artist Bhatti Shiv Das, dated samvat 1880/AD 1824 gouache and gold on paper, nagari inscription in red on painted surface, gold and red inner borders, outer border with stencilled floral motifs on a buff ground, two lines of nagari inscriptions verso 335 x 250 mm. (sight); with borders 377 x 277 mm. Footnotes: Provenance Formerly in a private collection, Michigan, USA. With Oliver Forge and Brendan Lynch, 2013. Private UK collection: acquired Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 24th April 2018, lot 339. Published Oliver Forge & Brendan Lynch, Indian Painting 1580-1850, 2013, no. 40. The inscription in the upper part of the painting reads: Nabab Mahammad Sa Khan kitab Karnel Mukhtiyar dolo (the meaning of which, apart from the name, is obscure). There is also an inscription on the reverse: Ram/Nibab Muhammad Sa Khan/kitab/Karnail Mukhtiyar daulau//kalam citara Bhati Sivdas Udairam ra ri samvat 1880 Maha suda 4 bud ('the work of the artist Bhatti Shiv Das, son of Udairam, Wednesday the 4th tithi of the bright half of the month Magha in samvat 1880' [4th February 1824]). Nawab Muhammad Sa Khan was a Muslim notable, perhaps in the service of Maharajah Man Singh of Jodhpur. For the artist Bhatti Shiv Das, working under Maharajahs Man Singh and Takht Singh, see D. Buyers' Premium and Charges

Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
