A ruler, perhaps Maharao Bhao Singh of Bundi, holding a spear; verso, a maiden holding flowers Golconda, circa 1680 gouache and gold on paper, borders with undulating floral motifs on a silver-sprinkled ground, nasta'liq inscription in upper border recto, trimmed 187 x 117 mm. Footnotes: Provenance Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 19th January 2011, lot 343. Private collection, USA, 2011-present. For examples of this double-sided type, see E. Binney, The Mughal and Deccani Schools: Indian Miniature Painting from the Collection of Edwin Binney III, Portland, Oregon 1973, p. 158, no. 132, and pp. 162-163, no. 139 (two separate double-sided leaves). The maiden in our painting resembles the one in no. 132, especially in her costume: Binney observes that 'Golconda was a major centre for patterned textiles during this period'. The prince holding a spear bears an even stronger resemblance to the figure in 139b, Maharao Bhao Singh of Bundi (reg. 1659-82). Binney notes: 'Many Rajput lords served in the Mughal armies during Aurangzeb's successful campaigns against Bijapur and Golconda'.
