Two illustrated leaves from a manuscript of Firdausi's Shahnama Kashmir, late 18th/early 19th Century Persian manuscript on paper, 32 lines to the page, text (recto and verso) written horizontally and diagonally in nasta'liq script in black ink in four columns, one heading written in red, intercolumnar rules in gold, inner margins ruled in gold, black and red, trimmed and lacking wide outer margins, paintings in gouache and gold 415 x 195 mm.(2) Footnotes: Provenance Private UK collection. The subjects of the paintings are: Rustam killing a warrior, perhaps the King of Mazandaran; the accession of Shapur to the throne. However (as is sometimes seen in Kashmiri manuscripts of the Shahnama), text and image do not go together. In the first leaf, the text relates to Kay Kavus's army on their way to Mazandaran to fight the White demons, but the image depicts Rustam (identified by his leopard-skin tunic) in combat with another warrior. In the second leaf, the heading in red reads Shapur's accession to the throne, but the text (above and below the image) relates to Shapur capturing Caesar.
