1961 Triumph 498cc 5TA Speed Twin Registration no. 769 YUH Frame no. H22702 Engine no. 5TAH27429 (see text) When Triumph adopted unitary construction for its vertical twins, the 5TA Speed Twin (introduced in September 1958) would be the second model of this new family, joining the 350cc Twenty One/3TA launched the previous year. The 5TA closely followed the lines of its '350' predecessor, there being little to distinguish it mechanically apart from a larger bore, raised gearing, and larger-section rear tyre. The controversial 'bathtub' rear enclosure introduced on the Twenty One was retained and the Speed Twin came finished in the model's traditional Amaranth Red. This Speed Twin was acquired by the private vendor in 2012 from a Yorkshire-based collector reputed to have owned over 20 Triumphs at the time. Restored by the previous owner, the 5TA has been equipped with a Boyer Brandsen electronic ignition system, a modification widely regarded as sensible. It features a red/maroon repaint instead of the original Amaranth Red but otherwise retains its original design. The vendor was informed that its bathtub fairing is one of the rare 'internal seam' types. It should be noted that the motorcycle is fitted with a later engine and was previously registered as '847 AVN' until 2011, believed to be its original 1961 Vehicle Registration Number. The motorcycle is described as a delight to ride and idles smoothly (video on file). This charming Triumph remains a distinctive classic, admired for its innovative design, refined performance, and enduring appeal among collectors. Offered with V5C, a good selection of past MoT's, expired tax discs and key. Saleroom notices: Contact the department for the running video.
