Cecil Beaton (British, 1904-1980) Sawai Man Singh II, Maharaja of Jaipur and Maharani Gayatri Devi, Rajmata of Jaipur, circa 1944 Two portraits of the couple, gelatin silver print, possibly printed later, with photographer's ink-stamp credit to reverse 24 x 23.5cm (9 7/16 x 9 1/4in) (2) Footnotes: Sawai Man Singh II, was the Maharaja of Jaipur from 1922-1947. Following partition and the absorption of Jaipur into an independent India, he retained his title and, in later life, served as the Indian Ambassador to Spain. Gayatri Devi was Man Singh II's third wife who became a public figure in her own right, becoming a politician and parliamentarian. Beaton visited India towards the end of World War II to take photographs for the Ministry of Information. It is likely that the present images were taken during this trip. A similar photograph can be found at the National Portrait Gallery, NPG x132089.
