KINOSUKE EBIHARA (1904-1970) Horse drawn sleds in a winter landscape signed 'Ebihara' (lower right); signed 'Ebi' (on the reverse) oil on panel 19.2 x 24.2cm (7 9/16 x 9 1/2in). Painted circa 1928-1930 Footnotes: Provenance (Possibly) Gustave Kahn Collection, France. Hollywood Road Gallery, London. Private collection, London (acquired from the above circa 1992). Just as his mentor Tsuguharu Foujita before him, Kinosuke Ebihara had trained as a fine artist in Japan and subsequently made his way to France to experience the European avant-garde. After moving to Paris in 1923, Ebihara searched out the company and guidance of his countryman, gaining access to the artists and collectors of the day through the exuberant Foujita and eventually exhibiting his work at the Salon de l'Escalier. From this point on he gained greater recognition and success, leading to a personal exhibition of his works in New York in 1928. Ebihara continued to travel back and forth between Japan and France throughout his life, and returned to visit Foujita before his death in 1970. As one of the many émigré artists that made up the École de Paris, Ebihara was perhaps best known for his depictions of snow, typically employing the unique blue pigment seen in the present work.
