AN ALBUM OF PHOTOGRAPHS OF ST. ELIZABETH'S ORPHANAGE IN NEW ORLEANS. Album with 30 8 x 10-inch photographic prints, 14 in color and 16 in black and white, photos mounted into album leaves, bound into black calf gilt album with silk moire endpapers, all edges gilt, label in Rice's hand to front pastedown reading: 'St. Elizabeths Orphanage for Girls / 1314 Napoleon Ave. / New Orleans, Louisiana / (prior to 1992).' St. Elizabeth's orphanage on Napoleon Street was opened in 1883 as a Catholic home for girls aged 14 and up under the care of the Daughters of Charity. For many years it was known as St. Elizabeth's Home of Industry, and the young women in its care were taught home-making, dress-making and other skills so that they might be able to earn their own living. St. Elizabeth's functioned as an orphanage/home for girls up until the 1980s. This album seems to date from the mid-to late 1970s and shows the stately exterior of St. Elizabeth's as well as the gathering rooms, bedrooms, dining room and outdoor play spaces used by the girls. The 58,500 square foot building was purchased by Rice in 1993 and turned into a showcase, opening it up for tours and fundraisers, while the family lived in another Garden District home not far away. Purportedly the building was haunted by the ghosts of at least three girls. Rice sold St. Elizabeth's in 2002 and today it has been converted to luxury condominiums.
