ANNE RICE'S ANNOTATED COPY OF KINGS ROW. BELLAMANN, HENRY. 1882-1945. Kings Row. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1943. 8vo (196 x 134 mm). Original red cloth, spine stamped in black; nudging to corners, dust jacket chipped and worn. 'I REGARD THIS AS A LOST AMERICAN CLASSIC'--Anne Rice ANNOTATED AND WITH OWNERSHIP SIGNATURE to front free endpaper: 'Anne Rice / June 27, 2013 / Palm Desert.' When Henry Bellaman published Kings Row, his expose of hypocrisy in a small midwestern town, it was an immediate best-seller. Rice has carefully read and annotated this copy, complementing the writing (particularly when Bellamann writes about Father Donovan) and adds a long note on the rear pastedown: 'Pages & pages of this book are about the mind—about how the mind learns, expands, grows, experiences.' Sometimes her comments are in conversation with the text, as when, on p 153, she underlines the town of Auvergne and writes 'Auvergne, what a coincidence! As I plan a trip there and write about Lestat!' In her final interview with the New York Times, published posthumously in December of 2021, Rice is asked 'What's your favorite book no one else has heard of?' Her reply? ''Kings Row,' by Henry Bellamann. It's so terribly sad to me that Bellamann's novels have been all but forgotten today. I regard this as a lost American classic. It was a great success upon its release and made into a film that featured a young Ronald Reagan. I discovered it after stumbling across the film, and then I rushed out to obtain a copy of the novel. It's such a rich exploration of how we survive in a world full of ugliness, loneliness and suffering. As soon as I finished it, I went right to Amazon and posted a five-star review.'
