Anne Rice ownership signature to flyleaf dated August 22, 2019, annotated and tabbed by her throughout. WITH: another copy. Wrappers. Signed by Rice on February 2014; annotated and tabbed throughout. 'A NOVEL ABOUT A WRITER': so begins Anne Rice's close reading of Alcott's classic novel about the March sisters during the Civil War. Rice annotates the introduction in the Penguin Classics copy by Feminist literary scholar Elaine Showalter, highlighting the analysis of the 'apple' imagery throughout Alcott's novel as a symbol of humanity's fall. Rice underscores and/or tabs many memorable scenes in both copies of this novel, but perhaps the most poignant takes place toward the end of the story, when Marmee addresses a dejected Jo: 'Why don't you write? That always used to make you happy....' And before long, Jo March has used her writing to turn her misery into grist for her stories, and her stories find an admiring audience.
