Signed, heavily tabbed and annotated by Rice throughout. 2. ---. Milton's Shorter Poems. [London]: Collins Clear Type Press, c.1936. 12mo. Original stamped cloth. Thumbsoiled. Signed, tabbed and heavily annotated by Rice. 'A JOY TO SWIM IN SUCH LANGUAGE.' ANNE RICE'S COPIES OF PARADISE LOST AND MILTON'S POEMS. Unlike Dickens and even Shakespeare, Milton is traditionally a 'tough read,' full of dense metaphoric language that requires intense concentration to parse. On the flyleaf of Paradise Lost (this copy a 'Biblically annotated edition'), dated February 23, 2017, Rice writes, 'In years past, this was opaque and impenetrable, save now & then for an occasional luminous phrase, but now I find it utterly irresistable.' On the title page she continues, 'Opened at a bad time, a dark time, searching for inspiration guidance—a joy to swim in such language.' Throughout both volumes Rice underscores particularly resonant words and phrases and in Shorter Poems, copies many over on the preliminary leaves.
