VIRGINIA WOOLF TITLES FROM ANNE RICE'S LIBRARY. WOOLF, VIRGINIA. 1882-1941. 3 titles: 1.To The Lighthouse. New York: Harcourt, Brace and World, 1955. 8vo. Wrappers. 2.Mrs. Dalloway. New York: Harcourt, Brace and World, 1953. 8vo. Wrappers. 3.Nurse Lugton's Golden Thimble. London: The Hogarth Press, 1966. 8vo. Purple cloth gilt. With presentation card laid in. To The Lighthouse is a 1968 Christmas gift from Anne to Stan Rice, with an inscription to Stan on the inside front cover and their Berkeley address at the upper left corner. Anne has added a Wallace Stevens quote: 'Death is the mother of all beauty' to the end of her inscription. Both of these paperbacks have been very closely read and annotated by Anne Rice, who underscores the phrase 'her precise old-maidish movements' in TTL, p 220 and writes, 'Why endow her with this? Why does Mrs. Dalloway have to be so limited also? Why the insistence on exploring the non-artist?' On p 230, Rice writes: 'V.W.'s sympathy and awe in the face of children is profound—and consistent—she seems always to be on the side of their rights.'
