South Moon Under is Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings' first novel, set among the same North Florida scrub pines as her more famous works, Cross Creek and The Yearling. According to her notes, Rice started reading this copy on May 16, 2015 and finished it two days later. On the flyleaf she writes, 'Having read & loved 'The Sojourner' and 'The Yearling,' I'm starting this one & already finding beauty and inspiration.' On p 69 she writes, 'There is something sad about it, the cycle of life and death, ignorance and struggle without the mysticism of a Jody ('The Yearling') or an Asa in 'the Sojourner.' The overview is frightening.' By the end of the novel, however, Rice reaches the conclusion: 'A powerful story—beautifully written.' Present in this lot are Rice's copies of later editions of Cross Creek and Cross Creek Cookery. The first title, dated May 8, 2015, and signed by Rice, includes the note: 'This doesn't hold my interest. The 'Sojourner was much more intense.' Cross Creek Cookery bears tabs on several recipes, one with a note reading, 'Let's try this.'
