A Sèvres biscuit porcelain bust of Jules Grévy, modelled by Albert-Ernest Carrier Belleuse, dated 1887 The bust resting on a blue socle with gilt bands, the reverse inscribed 'CARRIER BELLEUSE' 41.5cm high, stamped 'S 82' in green and 'RF DORE A SEVRES 87' in red to base, Footnotes: Jules Grévy (1807-1891) was President of France from 1879 to 1887 under the Third Republic. An early opponent of direct voting out of concern for the overly powerful mandate it gave to the executive, Grévy was arrested in the 1851 coup d'état that enabled Louis-Napoleon, who had been elected President, to establish the Second Empire (1852-1871) with him at the helm as Emperor Napoleon III. Following this, Grévy returned to his career as a lawyer, rejoining politics only in 1868 and rapidly rising to become President of the National Assembly in 1871 and finally President of the Republic on 30 January, 1879 after the resignation of President Mac-Mahon. As President, Grévy governed as a moderate, advocating limited use of presidential prerogatives and embarked on a pro-peace foreign policy, especially towards its more powerful neighbour, Germany.
