A BULLET RIDDLED 'BATTLE OF THE BULGE' BASTOGNE ROAD SIGN, 1930s/40s. The sheet metal sign with blue and white enamel surface reading '10K BASTOGNE' and in the lower right corner 'P&C ADR LOT 115/1937' with at least four bullet holes through the sign and several impacts on the back side. Wd. 51, ht. 11 3/4 in. A period wartime road sign taken from around the area of Bastogne, a fulcrum for American defense during the Battle of the Bulge. The Battle of the Bulge was the last offensive campaign of Germany in World War II. On 16th December, German forces broke through the Ardennes region, some 406,000 men, 1200 tanks and 4200 artillery pieces. It was winter and the Americans were caught off guard and pulled back against the savage assault in winter conditions. By December 21, German forces had surrounded the crossroads of Bastogne, a strategic point in the road network, where the 101st Airbourne, the 10th Armored Division and the 969th African-American Artillery Division set up their perimeter and held it against superior forces for 5 days. Food and ammunition ran out, and by the 22nd, each soldier had only 10 rounds to use each day. Patton's 4th Armored Division after a forced march, together with the 26th Yankee Division arrived on the 26th December, and broke through the German attack. Losses were considerable on both sides. Footnotes: Provenance A Belgian Collector. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
