RARE AND INFLUENTIAL CRITIQUE OF CHRISTIANITY. ENGLISH, GEORGE BETHUNE. 1787-1828. The Grounds of Christianity Examined. Boston: Printed for the Author, 1813. 8vo (193 x 112 mm). Errata leaf. Contemporary paper boards. Provenance: William Berrian (bookplate to front endpaper); Library of Meadville Theological School (perforated stamps to title page, dedication page, page 44). RARE FIRST EDITION OF ENGLISH'S CONTROVERSIAL POLEMIC, SIGNED ON THE COPYRIGHT PAGE, 'Geo. B. English.' English obtained a masters from Harvard Divinity School in 1811, and was awarded the prestigious Bowdoin Prize, but was never ordained. He published this controversial treatise in 1813 questioning his belief, and incorporating the first English treatment of the Hizzuk Emunah of Rabbi Isaac ben Abraham of Troki. The publication sparked a lively debate with Harvard contemporaries Samuel Cary. William Ellery Channing, and Edward Everett, and led to English's excommunication from the Unitarian Church in 1814. In 1815, he joined the military, ending up in Egypt where he converted to Islam, and worked closely with Muhammad Ali Pasha, possibly as an American spy.
