ROOSEVELT CAMPAIGN 'BATTLE FLAG' KERCHIEF. Printed linen kerchief, 1912, in red and dark brown on white ground, approximately 22 x 24-1/2 inches (560 x 630 mm), featuring a portrait of Theodore Roosevelt in the center, and the wording 'PROGRESSIVE / ROOSEVELT / 19 12 / BATTLE FLAG' above and below the portrait, marked 'D. & C. NY' at lower left corner, and 'Copyright by Underwood & Underwood NY' below portrait. Most of red areas faded on recto, fold creases, a few small pinholes. After losing the Republican nomination to William Howard Taft in 1912, former president Theodore Roosevelt formed a third party — the Progressive party, nicknamed the 'Bull Moose' party — to run against Taft, as well as Democrat Woodrow Wilson and Socialist Eugene Debs. Wilson won by a landslide, securing 435 electoral votes to Roosevelt's 88, leaving only 8 electoral votes for Taft, and none for Debs. This was the most successful third-party presidential run in U.S. history in terms of electoral votes, and second only to Horace Greeley's run with the Liberal Republican party in 1872 in percentage of the popular vote (27.39% for Roosevelt vs 43.78% for Greeley). Nonetheless, the party lost its focus when Roosevelt declined the nomination in 1916, and faded into irrelevancy by the end of World War I. Lot to be sold without reserve.
