A 30-STAR AMERICAN FLAG, 1848. Canton of 30 stars against blue, field of 13 alternating red and white stripes, circa 1848, approximately 96 x 144 inches (2.4 x 3.6 meters), hand-stitched in linen with canvas hem at hoist edge, with loops of black thread for attachment to a pole, with inked name 'A.D. Smith' on canvas strip, and initialed 'A.D.S.' in one of the stars. Light soiling and discoloration, a bit faded, some small stains and repaired tears stitched with black thread. Attributed to Wisconsin Supreme Court justice Abram Daniel Smith (1811-1865), and possibly flown in his chambers. The 30th star was added to the flag upon the admission of Wisconsin to the Union in 1848, and was the official flag of the United States for three years. Abram D. Smith was a fervent abolitionist, originally from New York, who became a prominent leader of the Hunter's Lodge, an organization that advocated anti-royalist rebellion in Canada. During the Canadian Rebellion of 1837 and 1838, the rebels declared an independent Republic of Canada, and elected Smith the President. The rebellion, however, did not receive support from the U.S. Government, and was unsuccessful. After moving to Milwaukee in 1842, Smith established a law practice and was elected to the Wisconsin Supreme Court in 1853. He ruled that the Fugitive Slave Act was unconstitutional — a decision that was upheld by his fellow Justices in Wisconsin, but later overturned by the U.S. Supreme court in the case of Ableman v. Booth. Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
