A 13 STAR 'BETSY ROSS' U.S. FLAG. Canton of 13 stars against blue, field of 13 alternating red and white stripes, c. 1930, 24 x 36 inches (610 x 914 mm), in pieced linen with stitched stars, header of white canvas with 2 metal grommets, stamped '2 X 3 FT' in black ink, with a partially legible manufacturer's stamp 'Everwear Bunting' in black and red. The 'Betsy Ross' design, featuring 13 stars in a circle on the canton, has been used throughout the nation's history, as early as 1777, but because early regulations did not specify the arrangement of stars, it is not safe to assume that this particular pattern was the first official design of the U.S. National flag. It became highly popular during the Centennial celebrations of 1876, and has remained so. The attribution of the design to Betsy Ross is apocryphal, and the claim that she made the first U.S. flag has been disputed for many generations, but her name remains associated with the pattern nonetheless.
