JOHNSON PARDONS A CONFEDERATE SOLDIER, 1865. JOHNSON, ANDREW. 1808-1875. Document Stamp-Signed by Andrew Johnson ('Andrew Johnson') as President, and by William Hunter ('WHunter'), acting Secretary of State, a Presidential pardon for Captain Elijah Hawkins, 441 x 269 mm, 4 pp, bifolium, 2 pp partially printed and accomplished in manuscript, City of Washington, August 4, 1865, official seal, folds, with small tears at fold to 2nd leaf. WITH: Document Signed ('Autograph Document Signed ('G.W. Smith/ Maj Genl') a transportation pass for Hawkins to bring communication from Smith's Macon, Ga, Headquarters to the Hon. Secretary of War 'to Charlotte North Carolina or whatever point he may be at, and return,' dated April 14, 1865, 205 x 185 mm, additional passes signed on the same sheet by R.J. Hallett, for Maj Gen Howell Cobb, P.W. Thompson, and to the verso by R.R. Wood. SIGNED ON APRIL 14, 1865, THE DAY THAT PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN WAS SHOT. WITH: Pardon Signed ('?? Moore') as acting Provost Marshall, under orders of Maj. Gen. Wilson, for E. Hawkins, 140 x 210 mm, 1 p, Macon, Ga, May 9, 1865, partially printed and accomplished in manuscript. WITH: Manuscript Signed ('S.H. Toby') on behalf of Maj. Genl Smith, a leave of absence of 20 days for Elijah Hawkins, 88 x 202 mm, Head Quarters, Macon, Ga, March 11, 1865. WITH: a 1/16th plate tintype of Elijah Hawkins, 40 x 35 mm, cased, hinge broken on case. A SERIES OF DOCUMENTS FROM CAPTAIN ELIJAH HAWKINS, AIDE-DE-CAMP TO MAJOR GENERAL GUSTAVUS W. SMITH, including a Presidential pardon from President Andrew Johnson. Because of the volume of pardons at the time, Johnson was allowed to sign with a steel stamp, and Acting Secretary of State William Hunter signed in full, as William Seward was still recovering from the assassination attempt. Also included is a transportation pass for Hawkins to travel from Macon, Ga, to North Carolina (and eventually Washington), with a message from Major General G.W. Smith to Secretary of State Judah P. Benjamin. The pass is dated April 14, 1865, the day of President Lincoln's assassination. Elijah Hawkins enlisted in 1861 at 19 years of age, as part of the Confederate Cavalry under the command of Captain B.M. Hawkins. After the battle of Shiloh, he was made aide-de-camp to Major General G.W. Smith, his uncle, serving in engagements including the battle of Fredericksburg, and the battle of Atlanta. General Smith surrendered at Macon, Ga, on April 20, 1865. As evidenced here, Hawkins was paroled on May 9, 1865 at Macon, and pardoned by President Johnson, August 4, 1865. The documents include a Presidential Pardon signed by Andrew Johnson and acting Secretary of State William Hunter (due to SOS Sewell's recovery from assassination attempt). A signed note dated April 14, 1865 in Macon GA requesting transportation for Confederate Captain Elijah Hawkins, Aide-de-Camp from General Gustavus W. Smith to the Secretary of War. There are various replies included on the note related to his travel to Washington D.C. to reach the Secretary of War. The attached PDF includes descriptions of the documents and other details about the items we are interested in selling.
