Attributed to Jean-Baptiste Le Prince (French, 1734-1781) Woman in a Red Shawl with Blue Hair Ribbon with a possible indistinct inscription or signature (lower left); misattributed and with an indistinct inscription on a handwritten label (affixed to the reverse); with a fragmentary auction label (affixed to the reverse) oil on panel 6 1/2 x 5 3/8 in (16.5 x 13.5 cm). framed 9 3/8 x 8 3/8 x 1 in (24.0 x 21.3 x 2.5 cm). Footnotes: N.B. The present work bears a label inscribed 'Fragonard', so was brought for inspection by, Fragonard scholar, Eunice Williams. Ms. Williams rejected this attribution and instead recognized the work as a small sketch by Jean-Baptiste Le Prince. The beauty, softness, and gentleness of the woman's face are typical of Le Prince's work. Small oil sketches such as this were very popular with 18th-century private collectors; artists often created them not necessarily as studies for larger works, but as independent works in themselves. A painting very similar to the present lot and also attributed to Le Prince was sold at Sotheby's Paris on June 23, 2023 (lot 00093), as Study for the Lady in The Fortune Teller. The model for the present work may as well be the same as that for Le Prince's The Fortune Teller. Two versions of The Fortune Teller exist, one at the Hermitage Museum in St-Petersburg (inv. ГЭ-5645) and the other at the National Gallery in London (inv. NG5848).
