SARTRE, JEAN-PAUL. 1905-1980. WALTER SPITZER. 1927-2021. Illustrator. Oeuvre Romanesque. Paris: Éditions Lidis, 1964-1965. 5 volumes. 4to. 64 color lithographic plates by Walter Spitzer. Publisher's printed wrappers, later custom quarter calf and board chemises and marbled board slipcases, edges untrimmed. Some splitting to chemises at joints, otherwise fine. LIMITED EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, signed and inscribed by Walter Spitzer in pencil on the half-title of volume I: 'To Ronald — and Ronald, with my best souvenirs — and 'amitie,' W. Spitzer.' There were 5,012 numbered copies printed, excluding an undisclosed (but small) number held back for collaborators, of which this is one — marked 'H.C.' (hors de commerce) on the limitation page. Spitzer, who was selected by Sartre himself to illustrate the work, was born in Poland and interned in concentration camps by the Nazis, including Auschwitz. He survived, though his parents did not, and moved to Paris to study art. He died in 2021, a victim of the COVID-19 pandemic.
