Milliken, 1780. 8vo (210 x 130 mm). Engraved folding frontispiece map and 13 engraved portrait plates. Later tree calf, decorated in gilt with morocco lettering pieces on spine. Offsetting from plates to facing pages, map torn at stub and with some offsetting, bookplates, binding dry with chipped spine and upper cover nearly detached. Provenance: George Holme Sumner (British MP, 1760-1838; bookplate); Joseph Y. Jeanes (Philadelphia book collector, 1859-1928; bookplate); William H. Guthman (his sale, Bonhams & Butterfields, October 12, 2006, lot 491). FIRST EDITION. Anglo-Irish statesman Edmund Burke was generally sympathetic to the American cause, giving him the perspective to make this balanced examination of the events of the Revolutionary War. Howes B-975.
