To deliberate and decide on the Form of Federal Government recommended by the General Convention at Philadelphia.... New York: Francis Childs, 1788. 12mo (187 x 191 mm). Contemporary sheep, expertly rebacked, light toning throughout. FIRST APPEARANCES OF HAMILTON'S SPEECHES DEFENDING THE CONSTITUTION AT THE NEW YORK CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION. Although Anti-Federalists outnumbered the Federalists 47 to 20 in the legislature, Hamilton remarkably employed arguments he had made, along with John Jay and James Madison, in the Federalist Papers published throughout the preceding year. Over the course of weeks, in some of the most contentious proceedings of the young nation, Hamilton and his fellow Federalists were able to convince the Anti-Federalists to ratify the United States Constitution, one of the most important documents in world history.
