Quarter cloth over boards, black morocco spine label with gilt lettering, original wrappers bound in. Publisher's wrappers bound in, scuffed and worn, minor foxing and toning. Provenance: Adrien Rouquette (presentation inscription) to: Valmont Soniat du Fossat; G. Cusachs (bookplate); Mrs. Titcomb (inscription from 'S.J. Shuratz'); by descent. A RARE NEW ORLEANS POETRY IMPRINT, A PRESENTATION COPY FROM ADRIEN ROQUETTE, NEW ORLEANS'S POET-PRIEST, inscribed at the head of the title page for Valmont Soniat du Fossat. Rouquette was born in New Orleans in 1813 to an important early Louisiana family. He spent most of his time in his youth however amongst the Choctaw tribe. Educated in France, he returned to New Orleans and became a priest, and a poet of some renown, before leaving it all to become a missionary to the Choctaws in 1859, just before the publication of this work.
