Engraved frontispiece portrait trimmed and tipped in to volume I, atlas with engraved title page, 69 maps and plates, a number of which are folding. Contemporary diced calf, rebacked in modern morocco; atlas in half morocco and cloth. Dampstaining to quarto covers, cloth on atlas sunned, dampstaining to text leaves in volume I, one plate (Details de la llane femelle du chili) torn and repaired on verso, minor foxing. Provenance: Property of a Northwest Collector. FIRST EDITION. La Perouse left France for the west coast of North America including Alaska in 1785, after sailing around Cape Horn and first stopping on Easter Island and Hawaii. He explored the area much more thoroughly than Cook, collecting information regarding the fur trade, the Spanish settlements including the missions of California, the native people, and much geographical information. The expedition was lost in 1788 after leaving Botany Bay where the final dispatch was sent. The remnants of the two ships were found 39 years later by Peter Dillon.
