RARE 31-PLATE VERSION OF CATLIN'S PORTFOLIO, PLATES ONLY. CATLIN, GEORGE. 1796-1872. North American Indian Portfolio. Hunting Scenes and Amusements of the Rocky Mountains and Prairies of America. [London: Chatto & Windus, c.1875]. 31 hand-colored lithograph plates on paper, the first 25 numbered 1 - 25, with the 6 additional plates unnumbered, each 568 x 406 mm (sheet), disbound, lacking letterpress text and preliminaries. COMPLETE SET OF 31 HAND-COLORED PLATES COMPRISING CATLIN'S FAMOUS NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN PORTFOLIO. Catlin quit his job as a lawyer to pursue a life in art. He eventually left Philadelphia for the West after seeing and being impressed by a delegation of Indians visiting the city. He had the help of William Clark, then Superintendent of Indian Affairs, who allowed Catlin to accompany diplomatic missions among the Indians of the West east of the Rockies. He spent eight years collecting sketches and oils that would become George Catlin's Indian Gallery and the basis for his books. In 1844, he produced 31 lithographic stones for his monumental portfolio, but only 25 were published. A 'complete' edition finally appeared (without imprint) sometime around 1875, publishing the first additional plates for the first time. Exceedingly rare. See Reese 'The Production of Catlin's North American Indian Portfolio, 1844-1876,' unpublished paper; Howes C-243; Sabin 11532; Wagner-Camp 105a:3. WITH: 2 additional hand-colored plates, mounted on card, with titles trimmed and affixed beneath: 'Buffalo Hunt, Surround,' 306 x 450 mm (plate), and 'Buffalo Hunt, White Wolves attacking a Buffalo,' 300 x 454 mm, each with a closed tear in the margin of card mount.
