HOLBROOK, JOHN EDWARDS. 1794-1871. North American Herpetology; or, A Description of the Reptiles inhabiting the United States. Philadelphia: J. Dobson, 1842. 5 volumes. 4to (282 x 229 mm). 147 hand-colored lithographic plates, errata slips tipped in before tables of contents in volumes II, II, IV and V, errata leaf at end of Volume V. 20th century brown morocco and pebbled cloth, spines decorated and titled in gilt, top edges gilt. Spines sunned, light wear to bindings, scattered foxing as usual (heavy in some places), fingermarks, offsetting from plates. Provenance: Thomas Ostrom Enders (American diplomat, 1931-1996, bookplates); Watkinson Library at Trinity College, Harford, CT (withdrawal stamps on bookplates). FIRST COMPLETE EDITION. 'Worthy of a place in the library of the naturalist by the side of Audubon and Wilson' (Sabin). The first edition had only the first three volumes, to which two additional volumes were added for this edition. Holbrook trained in medicine but gained a fascination with reptiles while traveling, which would lead him to become the first American zoologist to attempt a complete work on this subject.
